It’s National Poetry Month!

This month, we’ve been talking about, reading, and writing poetry. This Thursday is Poem in Your Pocket Day, a fantastic day we celebrate each year here at Crocker. On Poem in Your Pocket Day, we all have a poem in our pockets (or our heads) ready to share with anyone who asks to hear our poems. We share in class, at lunch, on the playground, with our buddies, in the office, even the bathroom! If you happen to visit Crocker on Thursday, bring a poem — or pick up a poem in the office or library. Some of our first graders have been memorizing poems to get ready for Poem in Your Pocket Day. Here’s a sneak peak:

Poem In Your Pocket Day is Here!

Break out the Shel Silverstein – Thursday, April 24 is Poem in Your Pocket Day! This is the fourth time we’ve celebrated this incredible day at Crocker. It’s pretty simple — have a poem in your pocket and be ready to share it. If you’re still learning to read or don’t have pockets, you might need to memorize your poem. It doesn’t hurt to practice reading or reciting your poem. That’s it. All that’s left is to show up and share your poem.

Thanks to Ms. Ski’s class for the beautiful flowers and bulletin board! Happy National Poetry Month!

We’re Celebrating National Poetry Month!

This month is National Poetry Month! To celebrate, the kids will be reading and writing poetry all month. To get things started, our first graders are learning about and creating acrostics like the examples you see here.

Second graders are illustrating and recording poems using a website called Littlebirdtales.com. Third graders will create and illustrate acrostics using Powerpoint. Some students will be recording poetry along with music using Garageband. Fifth graders will be publishing some of their poetry on their blogs. Many students are writing original poetry – including our kindergarteners. We’ll be wrapping up the month with Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 26. If you’ll be at Crocker that day, don’t forget your poem! Stay tuned for original Crocker Cougar poetry and lots, lots more.
